FLYING CRANK GHOST (FCG)

Original design by Doug Ferguson of Phantasmechanics. This was my first project above and beyond store-bought decorations. It took a while to prepare for and complete, but the results are worth it.

FCG under black light FCG under normal light The left image is in "normal" light; The right image is viewed under black light. (For some reason, the green glow of her hands and face did not come out well in the picture.)

If you're unfamiliar with the FCG it should be noted that it is an animated prop. The arms and head of the ghost rise and fall independantly of one another. View the video (just under 250k).

Some quick facts about the construction of my FCG:

  • She has two colors: her head, hands and frame are fluorescent green; her shroud is white, but glows blue under black light (thanks to a little RIT Whitener & Brightener).

  • Her hands are made from wire and masking tape, and then painted. These are sometimes referred to as "Corpse Hands".

  • The frame is made of thin wire and covered with foam water pipe insulation. The insulation is spray painted fluorescent green.

  • To give he a little "body", I attached some of those stretchy spider webs to the base of her neck, stretched them out a bit so they are kind of see-through, and then lightly sprayed them with green fluorescent paint.

Just For Fun

OK, here's another view of the same two images above. Put your mouse pointer over the image at the right to turn the black light "on".

Useless, but kind of fun!
